Eildon Pondage access

Well-known water immediately below the dam wall — platforms, foreshore and short trout sessions. Cold releases change the water quickly.

Current park notice (confirm official)

  • Lower Goulburn NP — some tracks and camps closed after inundation

Parks Victoria still lists temporary vehicle-track closures dated 20 August 2026 after localised flooding, including many camping-access tracks, Loch Garry tracks and boat ramp, and other named tracks. Additional areas can close without warning. Check the official park page and map before you drive onto the floodplain.

  • Lake Eildon NP — Gap Track closed (Pinnacle Track to O’Toole Creek)

Gap Track between Pinnacle Track and O’Toole Creek is closed (failed creek crossing; no reopen date). O’Toole Flat camping is reopened via Eildon–Jamieson Road only for self-sufficient 4WDs; no solid-fuel fires there while fireplaces are removed. Vehicle-accessible park camps (Jerusalem Creek, Candlebark, Devil Cove, Lakeside) are listed as open with non-flushing toilets — no showers, drinking water or flushing toilets at Candlebark, Lakeside or Devil Cove after facility upgrades.

Content reviewed:

Best for

  • Family shore fishing when platforms/access allow
  • Short walks for first-time visitors
  • Anglers heading toward Thornton / Alexandra river reaches

Watch-outs

  • Cold-water releases from Lake Eildon
  • Crowds on peak weekends and holidays
  • Not a substitute for full lake boat ramps
  • Fishing rules change — VFA only for seasons and limits (river closed season ≠ automatic pondage rule)
  • Goulburn tailrace (below pondage toward Trawool) can have a total hook-and-line ban in the trout closed season — confirm VFA

Access notes

  • Treat pondage access as day-use recreation, not a secret night camp.
  • Always supervise children near platforms and cold water.
  • Valid recreational fishing licence requirements still apply unless you are exempt.
  • Private land and signed restrictions override any blog pin.

Facilities (orientation)

  • Shore / platform access patterns (confirm on site)
  • Nearby town services in Eildon and Alexandra
  • Parking that can fill early in peak season

Facility lists go stale. Prefer operator, park and council sources for toilets, fees and fuel on your date.
