Pondage trout at dawn and Shepparton natives at dusk means a long drive and tired fishing. Pick Option A or Option B.
Option A — Upper trout / pondage weekend
Base
Eildon, Thornton or Alexandra — see stay and upper guide.
Day 1
- Arrive mid-afternoon; shop; check VFA status for your waters
- Evening look at pondage platforms / river access in daylight (no night wading on unfamiliar banks)
- Early night
Day 2
- Dawn session on pondage or guided river session
- Midday heat break; dry gear; food
- Late afternoon second session if energy and conditions allow
- Optional: local tuition (fly-fishing businesses around Thornton)
Day 3 (optional)
- Short morning only; drive home before you are too tired
Option B — Lower natives weekend
Base
Shepparton — services and food. See lower guide.
Day 1
- Arrive; confirm VFA rules for lower waters
- Daylight look at town river parks and bridge access
- Do not trespass private banks because a forum said so
Day 2
- Fish one access area; watch snags and boat traffic
- Plan around plains heat
- Optional: Murchison stop for mid-to-lower scenery
Packing for either option
- Valid licence proof
- Sun, layers, polarised glasses, first aid
- PFD if fishing from craft
- Rubbish bags; leave banks clean
- Tell someone where you are fishing if banks are remote
What not to do
- Do not rely on memory for closed-season dates
- Do not wade cold release water carelessly
- Do not combine a late houseboat night with a 4am trout start
