Who this weekend is for

Groups who want multi-night water time without moving cars every day. Poor fit if people hate shared chores, cannot swim confidently, or refuse lifejackets. More detail: Lake & boats.

Two weeks out

  • Confirm hire contract, named masters, fuel policy, pump-out rules
  • Ask the operator about current storage percentage impacts for your dates
  • Assign food lead, safety lead and kids-watch roster
  • Check BoM long-range only as a vibe check — recheck 48 hours out

Day 0 / arrival afternoon

  • Drive Melbourne → Alexandra (supplies) → Eildon with buffer before briefing
  • Do not shop in a panic five minutes before handover
  • Complete briefing, safety walk-through, radio/phone plan
  • Short first leg only — first night near services if the group is new

Day 1 — learn the lake

  • Morning: sheltered arm exploration, swim only with watch and PFDs as required
  • Midday: heat management, shade, hydration
  • Afternoon: optional fishing (licence + VFA rules) or shore walk if levels allow
  • Evening: early anchor; no night heroics in timber

Day 2 — longer leg or rest day

  • If weather is clean: one longer scenic leg with fuel reserve
  • If wind is up: stay put, swim carefully, play cards — pride is optional
  • Lookouts can wait for a land day if the water is rough

Day 3 — return & handover

  • Fuel and pump-out per contract before the deadline
  • Allow cleaning and inspection buffer
  • Optional soft land lunch in Alexandra on the way home

Packing list

  • Food for full days + 20% buffer snacks
  • Sun gear, layers, first aid, medications, dry bags
  • Head torches, power banks, offline maps
  • Bin bags; leave-no-trace discipline

Plan B (wind / low water / mechanical)

Switch to cabin nights in Eildon, Merlo’s Lookout / land views, pondage walk, Alexandra meal. A land weekend is still a Goulburn weekend — see Eildon high-country weekend.
