Who this day is for
Visitors with bikes (own or hire where available) who want the Goulburn story without a houseboat. Not for people who only want cellar doors — use the Nagambie wine & weir day instead. Trail and town context: Mid Goulburn Valley.
Morning — trail segment
- Choose one segment length you can finish by early afternoon (out-and-back is simplest without a shuttle car).
- Useful bases: Yea, Alexandra or Seymour depending on where you start.
- Carry water, snacks, a tube kit, basic tools and sun protection. Check total fire ban status in summer.
- Surface and shade vary by cutting and open farm edge — do not trust last year’s blog for current conditions.
- Share the trail politely; announce when passing; control speed in shared zones.
- Download offline maps; coverage dies in cuttings.
Midday — river-flat recovery
- Lunch in Yea, Alexandra or Seymour depending on your segment ends.
- Short riverside walk only — save legs if you still want an afternoon drive.
- Rehydrate properly before any wine stop (alcohol + heat + fatigue is a bad mix on the highway home).
Optional afternoon
- Soft option: cafe and return to Melbourne.
- Wine option: one stop at Tahbilk or Mitchelton if you still have energy (book where required).
- Lake option: short Nagambie foreshore walk — not a second 40 km ride.
Heat / wind / smoke plan
Start earlier, shorten the segment, or cancel. A 35 °C open-farm section with a headwind is hard work, not a challenge to win. Check VicEmergency if fire weather is elevated.
What not to force
A full rail-trail day, a houseboat briefing and a Shepparton dinner in one day from Melbourne is too much.
