Current park notice (confirm official)

  • Lower Goulburn NP — some tracks and camps closed after inundation

Parks Victoria still lists temporary vehicle-track closures dated 20 August 2026 after localised flooding, including many camping-access tracks, Loch Garry tracks and boat ramp, and other named tracks. Additional areas can close without warning. Check the official park page and map before you drive onto the floodplain.

  • Lake Eildon NP — Gap Track closed (Pinnacle Track to O’Toole Creek)

Gap Track between Pinnacle Track and O’Toole Creek is closed (failed creek crossing; no reopen date). O’Toole Flat camping is reopened via Eildon–Jamieson Road only for self-sufficient 4WDs; no solid-fuel fires there while fireplaces are removed. Who this day is for

Visitors already on the plains, or stopping overnight in Shepparton on a longer Victorian road trip. If your only free day is for Lake Eildon, skip this and drive to the high country instead. Deep context: Lower Goulburn & Shepparton.

Morning — Meet the river in town

  • Coffee first, then a riverside park walk (Kaieltheban Park and bridge-edge paths are common places to start).
  • Photograph bridges and red gum edges without needing a boat.
  • Check local event boards for markets if your date aligns.
  • Heat strategy: start early in summer; carry water even for “short” walks.

Midday — Food & shade

  • Use Shepparton’s food density — cafes and restaurants beat thin highland menus.
  • Summer: prioritise air-conditioned breaks; heat on the plains is not a joke.
  • Food-bowl curiosity: markets and produce stalls when operating — confirm hours locally.

Afternoon options (pick one)

  • Soft: Museum / gallery / shopping and a second short river path.
  • Active: Longer cycle or walk on sealed paths if conditions are mild.
  • Park: Lower Goulburn National Park only if tracks and weather allow — Parks Victoria first; floodplains are serious.
  • Fishing: Read recreation & safety and VFA rules before you wet a line — do not rely on social media. Timed plan: fishing weekend.
  • Murchison: short drive for mid-to-lower scenery if energy remains.

Optional next morning — toward Echuca

The Murray confluence near Echuca is a separate outing. If that is the main goal, sleep closer to Echuca rather than driving back from Shepparton the same day. There is no continuous riverside bike path the whole way.

What not to force

Eildon, Shepparton and the Murray confluence in one day from Melbourne is too much. Pick one main focus.
