Who this trip is for

Self-drivers who want more than a single lake day. Two nights works only if you accept thinner coverage of one region. Region pages: upper · mid · lower.

Suggested night pattern

  1. Night 1 — Eildon / Alexandra: Follow the Eildon weekend arrival logic. Boat day optional. Houseboat is a different product — houseboat itinerary.
  2. Night 2 — Nagambie: Weir, wine and softer driving. Skip this night only if short on time (you will feel the gap).
  3. Night 3 — Shepparton: Plains services and lower-river orientation (itinerary).

Day-by-day skeleton (3 nights / 4 days)

Day 1 — Melbourne to high country

  • Depart early; supermarket stop in Alexandra
  • Arrive Eildon; lookout or lakeside walk
  • Early dinner; early sleep

Day 2 — Water or trout morning, then mid valley

  • Morning: lake day, pondage, or guided fishing (licence + VFA)
  • Afternoon drive toward Nagambie with buffer
  • Evening: lakeside pace, no marathon cellar stack

Day 3 — Wine / weir / rail, then plains

  • Morning: Tahbilk or Mitchelton (one primary) or short rail-trail segment
  • Goulburn Weir / Lake Nagambie orientation
  • Late afternoon continue to Shepparton

Day 4 — Lower river & exit

  • Riverside parks / Lower Goulburn NP context if conditions allow
  • Food-bowl lunch
  • Optional half-day toward Echuca only if you have real spare time
  • Return toward Melbourne or continue Murray country with a separate plan

What to book first

  • Eildon accommodation or houseboat in peak season
  • Any must-do cellar door or long lunch on weekends
  • Parks Victoria camps if using park inventory
  • Do not pre-pay non-refundable boat days without a weather buffer

Budgeting time honestly

Mapping apps lie about photo stops, grocery queues and “quick” cellar doors. Build 25–40% buffer on every transfer day. Tired drivers make bad wildlife-on-road decisions at dusk.

Safety

Read recreation & safety once before you leave. Check BoM daily. Confirm Parks and water-authority notices if camping or launching. Use VicEmergency for fire incidents while travelling.
